東京生まれ。
2006年、資生堂〈マキアージュ〉タイアップ曲「My Brand New Eden」でメジャーデビュー。
以降、アルバムリリースやLIVE活動と共に、TV・ラジオの番組テーマやコマーシャル曲、舞台や映画の音楽監修も務める。（BS-TBS「大沢たかお インカ帝国 隠された真実に迫る」「カリブ海縦断5000km 大森南朋 奇跡の楽園」「ミステリアス・アメリカ〜生物大絶滅と縄文人の謎」「徳さんのお遍路さん 四国遍路八十八ケ所 心の旅」/NISSEY/ジョンソンヴィル/トヨタレンタリース/月桂冠「糖質ゼロ」等）
現在、北海道米「ななつぼし」コマーシャル曲（歌唱）、新菱冷熱工業のコマーシャル曲（作曲、プロデュース）がオンエア中の他、自身の活動に加え、企画プロデュース、楽曲提供、環境保護活動などにも取り組む（2012年よりフォレストサポーターズに加入）。また音楽だけでなく、女優としても舞台やドラマ（NHKドラマ10「聖女」）に出演する等、表現者として活動の場を拡げている。
2017年4月には、TVアニメ「終末なにしてますか？忙しいですか？救ってもらっていいですか？」に音楽（作詞作曲、歌唱）で参加。2018年、世界的人気のアニメ「フルメタル・パニック！」の新シリーズ「フルメタル・パニック！Invisible Victory」の主題歌（オープニング・エンディング曲）を手がけ、主題歌集「Operation Able」をリリース。
ヒットを記録し、国内外問わず大きな注目を集めている。同年10月には、自身初のベストアルバム「山田タマル ALL-TIME BEST とっくに愛してる」をソニー・ミュージック・ダイレクトよりリリース、12月にはシングル「恋をしなさい」（BS-TBS「大沢たかお インカ帝国 隠された真実に迫る」テーマ曲）をデジタルリリースした。
2019年、トルコ至宝展特別番組テーマ曲「Lâle」（ラーレ）を、
翌2020年には、コロナ禍でリモートにより完成させた真衣子（Vln）、秋山暁子（Pf）とのトリオアルバム「VITA NUOVA」をプロデュースし、5月に配信、翌月限定CDをリリースした。 11月11日、書き下ろしで作曲した「ひととせ巡る頃に」（大野朋来メジャーデビューアルバム収録）がリリースされ、ソングライターとしても注目を集める。 同年12月、約2年ぶりのオリジナルアルバム「AQUARIUS」をデジタルリリースした。

Singer, songwriter Yamada Tamaru, a native of Japan, began her love of music nearly childhood when she would listen to jazz and country music. That love of music has continued to grow over the years and she continues to perfect her music. In high school she formed a band and would later learn to compose music with the piano and guitar. In 2006 Tamaru produced two albums by Indies, and then debuted majors by commercial song of SHISEIDO ‘My Brand New Eden’. She has expanded her talent and has appeared in a commercial for Yebisu Beer “The Hop” and so on. Recently you can find Tamaru performing at the various scenes as a singer, actress as well. And also you can find Tamaru’s songs through animations-Japanese TV anime [Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory][WorldEnd-Syumatsu nani shitemasuka?Isogashii desuka? Sukuttemoratte Iidesuka?-]- and commercials, dramas, movies, TV programs. Tamaru makes high quality songs and sings with soulful voice. The voice and her vision of her creation envelop and captivate the people’s heart.
9 May 2018, the album of [Full Metal Panic!]s’ ‘Operation Able’ -by BANDAI NAMCO ARTS- was released and is big hit.
Tamaru attracts a lot of attentions, either in Japan or abroad. In October Tamaru released her first best-album ‘YamadaTamaru ALL-TIME BEST Tokkuni Aishiteru’ -by Sony Music Direct-.
And then produced the theme songs of special TV programs of BS-TBS about Inca, Native America and JOMON, Ottoman Turkey and so on. In 2020, she released 2 albums. One is by her Trio titled ‘VITA NUOVA’ , and the other is ‘AQUARIUS’. Both are now available on each digital platform -and about ‘VITA NUOVA’, also released limited CD!
